A prominent figure in the 1980s East Village art scene, he gained fame for his distinctive style and provocative self-promotion, which included cultivating a media persona and establishing Kostabi World, a studio where assistants help produce his work. His art is in major museum collections worldwide and has been featured on album covers, including Guns N’ Roses’s Use Your Illusion.
